modern Architects : Cabin by Olson Kundig

The cabin is five hundred square feet and is a private writers retreat and guest cottage.  Located on San Juan Island, Washington, the owners wanted the cabin to feel contacted to its setting, the climate, the wildlife and views. They also needed a structure that could be easily secured when not in use.

The cabin was designed as a glass house surrounded by three wooden slat decks that can be raised by a hydraulic system of wires, rope, pivoting sheaves and lead blocks, that serves as shutters.  When open, the shutter decks are outdoor living spaces; when closed they secure the cabin.  The fireplace rotates 180 degrees to be enjoyed indoors or out.  An inverted roof with deep overhangs forces water to  drain to the rear of the cabin.

The cabin is a single room with a small kitchenette and a bathroom.  Finishes are restrained, punctuated only by a blackened steel inlay that bisects the floor from the fireplace to the slot window at the rear of the cabin.

Flat Yellow Renovation shelf and wardrobe

Remember when we spoke earlier in the week about orange always reminding us of fall the most? Maybe we spoke too soon. This big old wall of yellow sure is getting our fall fires started in our souls, too. In Porto, Portugal, this project was a remodel, and we can’t help but smile when we think of what a strong punch of color, personality and joy this big yellow functional wall of storage has infused into this modern space. Created by Pedro Varela.

“Walls were remade out of carpentry work and house different solutions, from storage, to seating, partitioning and doors. Playful solutions such as assymetric round holes substituing knobs, and a smiley face substituting a handle, are carved in a yellow closet which is the project’s inner core.”

Modern Home Extension Displaying a Clever Architecture in Germany

Architecture company dmvA designed a modern and original home extension entitled “vB4” and located within the countryside of Brecht, Germany. According to the project developers, “the extension from the existing  form resulted in a floating volume built with trapezoidal wooden structures. The new timber parts followed the same frames and studs as the original. These borders next to each other connect the old and new space creating a new library, washroom and entrance area. The exterior is recladded in black stained siding positioned vertically to create a similar repetitive motion as the surrounding forest. The back and front of the home is fully glazed with a movable partition wall which allows for uninterrupted views of the adjacent garden and pond.” The new addition was planned on a challenging surface of only 26 square meters, while considering the strict building regulations of the municipality. Have a look at the photos below and tell us if you believe the lack of space had any negative effect on the “look” of the new building.

Modern Glass and Stone Residence at La Concha House by MOOARC

This classic modern house is just the kind of home design that i like. The house looks very exotic to us. The UK-based architectural studio MOOARC had transformed 15th Century barn on the Island of Guernsey into a high-end, luxurious modern home. This house was later named La Concha House. It’s a smart design, the architect remodeled the old structure and combine it with recycled building materials at this private residence.
